Seeing the Universe in Trees: Ink Art Workshop

Chinese painting is not merely a reflection of nature, but also a spiritual expression of literati and artists. Since ancient times, landscapes and trees have served as essential mediums for artists to construct their own universes and express their inner sentiments. Even a simple image of a single tree or leaf can contain boundless meaning and spiritual depth.

This workshop will focus on "Trees and Leaves" as the core subject, illustrating the fundamental structures and principles of painting trees and foliage. Under the artist’s guidance, participants will explore the fundamentals of ink and brush, discover the relationship between lines and planes — the visible brushwork and the underlying form, and construct their own spiritual realm through ink.

Joy of Sprightly Brushes: Expressive Ink Art Workshop

"Form Capturing Spirit" has always been the pursuit of ink artists. Its essence lies not in the realistic reproduction, but in capturing the vital energy and inner spirit of the subject. “Expressive” (Xieyi) painting is the very embodiment of this expression of the artist's inner vitality. Since the Song and Yuan dynasties, Chinese painting has shifted from objective depiction to subjective expression, establishing a unique artistic language of brush, ink, and philosophy in Chinese art. Whether the subject is a majestic natural landscape or everyday flora and fauna, this artistic language can convey emotion and artistic conception.

Unlike the meticulous detail and precision of “fine-brush” (gongbi) painting, xieyi emphasises the spontaneity of brush and ink and the expression of artistic conception. This workshop will guide participants to depict familiar flowers and animals in a xieyi style. Participants will explore fundamental applications of ink and brush through experimenting with ink tone variations and the rhythmic quality of lines.

By the end of the session, participants will not only understand the essential techniques of xieyi but also complete a delicate floral and bird painting that embodies both personal emotion and the charm of ink art.
