2024 UOB Art in Ink Festival holds 38 workshops, guiding participants in exploring the possibilities of ink art. Join the two-hour workshops to experiment with various ink art techniques, including collage and transcriptions. For a deeper exploration, participate in the four-hour Winter Camps, where you will learn techniques such as ‘fine-brush’ (gongbi) and ‘expressive’ (xieyi) styles, and delve into the limitless allure of ink art.

Artist: Dr Chui Pui Chee

Born in Hong Kong in 1980, Dr Chui Pui Chee apprenticed under Mr Jat See-yeu and Professor Wang Dong-ling. After graduated from Queen's College, Hong Kong, in 1999, Dr Chui pursued his first degree at the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He furthered his postgraduate studies at the Department of Chinese Calligraphy of China Academy of Art, where he obtained a Master of Arts and a doctoral degree. 

In 2012, Dr Chui received the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards — Young Artist Award, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. He also received the Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2015, organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He was a finalist of The Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2015, 2018 and 2020.

Dr Chui’s artworks have been collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology of University of Oxford and various private collectors.”.

Antique Christmas Tree Workshop

This workshop explores various traditional painting techniques for depicting trees. Participants will follow sophisticated illustrations and a step-by-step demonstration, learning to dye and delineate tree trunks, branches and pine needles. By the end of the workshop, each participant will create an antique-style Christmas tree to celebrate the festive season.

Expressive Deer Workshop

This workshop focuses on the traditional 'expressive' style (xieyi). Artist will demonstrate a variety of brushstrokes and colouring techniques for depicting deer. Participants will utilise the unique characteristics of raw Xuan paper, along with the tonal variation of ink and colour, to create a vibrant deer painting in celebration of Christmas.

Artist: Rebecca Hon Ngan Ting

Rebecca Hon is a Hong Kong artist who graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a master’s degree in Fine Arts, studying under the guidance of Wucius Wong. She also learned Chinese ink art from Chan Kwan Lap, Tony Ng and Wang Qiutong. In 2019, she attended Taipei National University of the Arts as an exchange student.

Hon’s artistic repertoire includes modern ink painting, digital art and installation art. Her works have been auctioned by Ravenel in Taiwan and exhibited in various locations, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and Scotland.

Hon has received accolades in both local and overseas competitions. She won the UOB Ink Art of the Year Award and the Gold Award in the Abstract — Open Category at the 2021 UOB Art in Ink Awards; as well as the Silver Award in the same category at the 2020 UOB Art in Ink Awards. Her winning artworks have been included in the UOB Art Collection. Additionally, she earned the third place in the digital art category at the 24th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition in Taichung, Taiwan, in 2019. Her works blend Eastern and Western concepts, merging traditional ink with new media to create works that harmonise cultural connotations with contemporary new media styles.

Christmas Ink Art Workshop

This workshop invites participants to explore the effects of ink diffusion on rice paper under the festive theme of Christmas. Utilising rendering and rubbing techniques, participants will experiment with various mediums to create a modern artwork that blends non-traditional methos with their creativity.

Artist: Professor Hung Keung

Professor Hung Keung, a distinguished media artist and academic, explores Chinese characters and calligraphy through contemporary technologies. He graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic Swire School of Design and the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He attained an MA in Film and Video from Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design and completed his PhD at the Planetary Collegium, Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Plymouth. He was also the recipient of the German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD) and the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) - Désirée and Hans Michael Jebsen Fellowship.

Hung has focused on how technologies such as digital ink applications and interactive platforms can enrich Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. He has actively participated in conferences, academic exchanges and residencies focused on interdisciplinary media art research at art institutions across Europe and Asia.

As an educator, Hung inspires his students to experiment with blending ink art and technology, encouraging them to explore the beauty of Chinese characters in innovative contexts. Through workshops and collaborative projects, he bridges the gap between ancient traditions and contemporary artistic practices, ensuring that ink art continues to evolve in today's digital age.

Family Ink Art Workshop: Flying Characters, Floating Ink

This workshop reinterprets the traditional medium — ink, brush, and Xuan paper — with a digital twist. Using camera lenses and a real-time animating process, the works will be transformed into animations. This innovative approach allows participants to experience the dynamic allure of Chinese characters from a fresh perspective.

This workshop highlights the bonding between family members. Registrants should sign up as a pair and collaboratively create a unique ink art piece.

Artist: Christine Lee Chi Man

Christine Lee has devoted over twenty years to the practice and teaching of Chinese ink painting. Drawing inspiration from nature, she believes that true beauty originates from the natural world.

Lee’s works were featured in the Ink Global 2021. In 2022, she won the Gold Award in the Landscape or Figurative – Open Category and the UOB Ink Art of the Year Award at the UOB Art in Ink Awards. Her winning artwork is now part of the UOB Art Collection.

Ink Transcription Workshop

This workshop explores modern ink painting, blending innovative techniques and traditional brushes. Participants will utilise diverse mediums and materials, employing the technique of transcription to create a snowy scene. The workshop aims to cultivate and nurture participants’ appreciation for the beauty of modern ink art.

Artist: Rainbow Leung

Rainbow Leung was born and raised in Hong Kong. She graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design and the School of Creative Media of City University of Hong Kong. Leung is the author of numerous picture books and comics, including Hong Kong Citizen Dictionary and Cat and Dog never die. Her work often portrays the harmony between humans and nature, as well as the everyday life in Hong Kong. Her current column is serialised in the Sunday MingPao.

As an enthusiastic art tutor, Leung teaches at various colleges, universities, schools and art institutions. In 2017, she was commissioned by M+ to lead the M+ROVER school tour. This notable project won the Award for Arts Education 2017 from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

This workshop guides participants in expressing their personal experiences through ink art. Artist: Ling Pui Sze

Ling Pui Sze graduated in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. She received the Wucius Wong Creative Ink Painting Award and an Honourable Mention for the Liu Kuo-sung Award in 2023.

Ling is known for her experimental ink and collage series, where she collects, tears and reassembles images of nature captured by machines like microscopes and satellites. These transformed images offer her interpretation of “reality” in a technology-driven world. By incorporating other media, such as sculpture, video and installation, Ling delves into the relationship between biological traits and the development of human society.

Experimental Ink Workshop

This workshop explores the diverse possibilities of collage and rubbings. Participants will work with different mediums including dried plants, charcoal, chalk and papers in the creation process. Participants will also experiment with the diffusion effects of ink and colour. Ultimately, they will create a non-traditional ink artwork.

Artist: Tony Ng Kwun Lun

Tony Ng earned his Master of Fine Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2011. He obtained a Diploma in Chinese Ink Painting from the Department of Extra-mural Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1986. Ng teaches at various art institutions in Hong Kong. He has received numerous awards, including the Hong Kong Urban Council Fine Arts Award (Painting, Chinese Media, 1994) and the Special Award at the 10th National Art Exhibition in 2004. His works are part of the collections at The Hong Kong Heritage Museum, The Hong Kong Museum of Art, University Museum and Art Gallery at The University of Hong Kong and various private collectors.

Inkscape - Abstract Ink Art Workshop

Hong Kong ink painting emerged in the 1960s and 1970s at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. After the continuous effort of artists, this art form has evolved into a unique artistic language within Hong Kong's contemporary art scene.

This workshop focuses on abstract ink painting. Through the exploration of various works and the practice, participants will deepen their understanding of the characteristics of ink painting, enhance their ability to appreciate, and be encouraged to experiment with new artistic endeavours.

Eight Brokens – Ink Collage and Mounting Workshop

‘Eight Brokens’ is a unique art form in China, believed to have originated in the Yuan dynasty and reached its peak during the Qing dynasty. This technique combines fragments of paintings and calligraphic works to create new compositions and images.

Inspired by ‘Eight Brokens’, this workshop integrates the skills of collage and mounting. Participants will have the opportunity to explore traditional mounting methods and create a unique artwork that blends the two distinctive crafts. 

As the work takes time to dry, participants should collect their work on 28 or 29 December 2024 at the Arts Pavilion. The details will be provided during the workshop.

Sim Shum attained her Master of Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts at The Hong Kong Baptist University. During her studies, she received several awards including Professor Raymond Fung Award for Chinese Painting, Academy of Visual Arts Award, and Sovereign Art Foundation Hong Kong Students’ Prize.

Shum specialises in ink art, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional aesthetics and daily-life experiences while seeking covert meanings in landscape painting and redefining shanshui motifs in our contemporary society.

Ink Landscape Workshop: Sailing Boats

In traditional Chinese landscape paintings, boats carry diverse meanings, reflecting the artist’s emotions, philosophies, and the relationship between humans and nature.

In this workshop, participants will depict the coasts and boats of Hong Kong. They will learn fundamental ink painting skills, including brushwork, ink tones and compositions. Ultimately, they will create a personalised artwork.

Artist: Frank Tang Kai Yiu

Frank Tang graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at The Hong Kong Baptist University in 2010 and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023. Tang has enriched his experience through artist-in-residence programmes, such as those hosted by the Zurich University of the Arts in 2014 and at Treasure Hill Artist Village in 2022.

Tang’s works have been exhibited in museums, art organisations and galleries in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Ink Sketching Workshop – Day and Night of West Kowloon

The term ‘sketch’ encompasses both the direct depiction of an object and the lively rendering of the subject. Artist records his travel experiences through sketches, which he later incorporates into his landscape creations.

In the daytime workshops, he guide the participants through the West Kowloon Cultural District. Following his path, participants will translate their first-hand experience into ink artwork.  

In the nighttime workshop, artist will share photos that capture his impression of the area. Under his guidance, participants will be able to use ink to render their personal interpretations of the scenery.

Artist: Professor Tong Kam Tang

Professor Tong Kam Tang received his B.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He studied Chinese painting and calligraphy under renowned masters such as Jao Tsung-I and Yang Shan-Shen. He learned seal carving under the instruction of esteemed seal carvers Ye Lu-Yuen and Ma Guo-Quan. Since joining the Department of Fine Arts in 1995, he has been teaching studio courses in Chinese calligraphy, seal carving, landscape painting and bird-and-flower painting.

Currently, Professor Tong is a member of the Xiling Seal Association and serves as an Expert Advisor (Chinese painting and calligraphy) to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Winter Camellia — Gongbi Workshop

Camellia represents wealth and fortune. Blooming in late winter and early spring, this flower symbolises grace and perseverance. With its auspicious meaning, it has long been a favoured subject for generations of artists.

In this workshop, participants will explore ‘fine-brush’ (gongbi) and heavy-colour techniques. By applying these skills, participants will create a snowy camellia painting that captures the essence of winter.

Christmas Floral — Gongbi Workshop

Commonly known as the ‘Christmas flower’, the poinsettia, or ‘Yipinhong’ in Chinese, is widely used for Christmas floral displays. The vibrant red plant symbolises purity and blessings.

In this workshop, participants will be guided to create a poinsettia painting using ‘fine-brush’ (gongbi) and heavy-colour techniques. By the end of the session, participants will complete a snowy still-life that captures the Christmas spirit.

Artist: Yau Wing Fung

Yau Wing Fung is an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. He focuses on ink creation and research, emphasising the transformation of visual experience, imagination, and situationality. Yau aims to expand the spatial imagination inherent in traditional ink works. His works have been included in prestigious collections such as Los Angeles County Museum of Art, M+, Hong Kong Museum of Art, as well as public and private collections.

Little Novelty in Gongbi Painting

‘Fine-brush’ (gongbi) is a style of painting that emphasises precision and delicacy, becoming fully developed during the Jin and Tang dynasties. Today, artists not only inherit traditional gongbi techniques but also incorporate innovative methods to depict a variety of new subjects.  

This workshop guides participants in exploring the techniques of gongbi painting. By modelling classic floral paintings, participants will learn fundamental techniques such as outlining, parting, and overdyeing to create their own fresh gongbi painting.

Unfold the Fantasy - Album Leaf Workshop

Album leaf is a traditional mounting format for Chinese painting and calligraphy. Each leaf can stand alone as an individual piece, or be fully unfolded to form a continuous art piece. An album leaf can focus on one single theme or express various contents, offering considerable flexibility for both creation and appreciation.

This workshop guides participants to create multiple flower paintings in the ‘boneless’ style (mogu). At the end of the session, they will create their own album leaf to display their personal artworks.

Artist: Stephanie Yeung Chung Nga

Stephanie Yeung, a native-born Hong Kong artist, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is dedicated to promoting Chinese ink art and teaches Chinese ink painting to children and fine brush (gongbi) painting to adults across various institutions.

Her artworks often feature realistic animals, such as white-eyes, crested mynas and pufferfish set against imaginary backgrounds. This contrast encourages viewers to find peace amid the hustle of modern life.

Her piece, Ode to the Lotus, won the Bronze Award in Landscape or Figurative – Open Category at the 2022 UOB Art in Ink Awards and is now part of the UOB Art Collection.

Mixed-style Ink Art Workshop: Cats in Snow

‘Fine-brush’ (gongbi) and ‘expressive’ (xieyi) are two distinct styles in ink art. This workshop incorporates these styles, showcasing a delicate combination of lines and colours. Under artist’s guidance, participants will use fine lines and spot-dyeing techniques to depict a lively cat against a snowy backdrop. The artwork will be painted on a silk fan, celebrating the festive Christmas spirit.

Artist: Simon Yung Chee Mun

Simon Yung is an ink artist based in Hong Kong. His artworks have been showcased in prestigious events such as the Hong Kong Art Biennale at the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the “Beyond the Surface: Chinese Abstract Art Exhibition” at The Macao Museum of Art. Yung has taken part in numerous significant art exhibitions, including Art Taipei, Art Jakarta, Affordable Art Fair, Fine Art Asia, Ink Asia and Ink Global, as well as various solo exhibitions. His works have been featured in international auctions and have been acquired by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Notable published collections of his art include Ten-Water Five-Rock and Compose Poems While Facing Springs.

‘Splashed ink’ Landscape Workshop

The ‘splashed ink’ technique blends ink and colour to create a delicate rendering effect. This workshop combines antique blue-and-green landscape painting with the modern cityscape of West Kowloon. Participants will create a unique art piece that reflects both tradition elements and contemporary influences.
